Most people have heard of Peking Opera, but have never seen one before. With the Peking Opera Festival, Wu Promotion aims to enable a unique experience of one of China’s most acclaimed art forms. After two celebrated festival editions in 2012 with performances in five countries, Beijing’s most renowned Peking Opera ensemble will return to the European stages in May 2013.

We have made a fine selection of original Peking Opera plays that combine all the characteristics of a true Peking Opera performance: drama, singing, music, dancing, martial arts and acrobatics. Beyond that, we offer an introduction to some of the key facts about Peking Opera. Basic background knowledge about the meaning of typical gestures, the abundant make-up and elaborate costumes help the audience to understand the fundamentals of this mysterious genre.

The Legend of the White Snake

This piece is a Chinese legend, which has been used as a popular subject in several Chinese operas, films and television series. The story tells of a young scholar Xu Xian who falls in love with a beautiful woman, unaware that she is actually a thousand-year-old white snake that has taken on human form. A monk named Fahai, envious of their love, devises many wicked plans in order to separate the couple. After many trials and tribulations, the white snake and Xu Xian are reunited.

The Red Maid

The play is set in the Tang Dynasty (618-907). A scholar named Zhang Gong is travelling to Chang'an to take part in an exam. When he stops one night at the Pujiu Temple, he meets the prime minister's daughter Cui Yingying. Astonished by her beauty, he immediately falls in love with her. He decides to stay and accommodates himself in the Western Chamber. In order to get closer to her, he sends her letters through her maidservant, the Red Maid. One day, the leader of the bandits, Sun Feihu, attacks the temple and forces Yingying to marry him. Facing this desperate situation, Yingying's mother Mrs. Cui promises that the person, capable of defeating the bandits will be allowed to marry her daughter. When Zhang Gong hears of her words, he writes to his friend, a general, asking for help.

After the defeat of the bandits, Mrs. Cui surprisingly changes her mind and denies Zhang Gong to marry Yingying, but the Red Maid helps them to exchange messages and arranges dates at the Western Chamber. When Mrs. Cui learns about their private encounters, she interrogates the Red Maid under torture. In the end, the Red Maid manages to make Mrs. Cui approve their relationship.

At the Crossroads

During the Northern Song Dynasty General Jiao Zan is exiled to a desert island after being framed for a crime. Warrior Ren Tanghui is ordered to trail after Jiao Zan to protect and rescue him. When Jiao Zan comes to rest in an inn at the Crossroads, the owner of the inn, who also acknowledges Jiao Zan's innocence, mistakes Ren Tanghui for an assassin set to murder Jiao Zan. As the misunderstanding ensues, the two fight fiercely in the dark.

The Goddess Of Heaven Scatters Flowers

This excerpt is based on a Buddhist tale. While preaching to the disciples, Vimalakirti develops an eye problem. When Buddha Sakyamuni learns about this, he senses that something is amiss and sends a celestial maiden to check if the disciples have been diligently cultivating themselves to the Buddhist doctrine. When the maiden scatters flower petals, they magically stick to the disciples, which signifies that they have not been learning Vimalakirti's teachings properly.

Presenting a Pearl on Rainbow Bridge

A celestial maiden named Ling Bo admires a young scholar named Bai Yong for his talents. It is love at first sight when they unexpectedly met on the Rainbow Bridge. Ling Bo sends Bai Yong a pearl symbolizing their eternal love. However, this union goes against the rules of Heaven; the immortal guards come to capture the celestial maiden Ling Bo. Ling Bo fights back, defeats the immortal guards and the lovers eventually reunite.

Established in the early spring of 1979, the Jingju Theater Company of Beijing is one of the largest and most prestigious Peking Opera performance groups in China. It is directly affiliated to the Beijing Municipal Government and enjoys an incomparable status in domestic opera performance. With a large repertoire of traditional and modern productions, the group has made remarkable achievements inheriting and developing the art of Peking Opera.

The Jingju Theater Company of Beijing has been home to numerous talented performers over the past decades. These performers have included the "Four Famous Dans" (artists who represent or impersonate themselves as female characters) Mei Lanfang, Shang Xiaoyun, Cheng Yanqiu and Xun Huisheng, and the "Five Most Acclaimed Performers" Ma Lianliang, Tan Fuying, Zhang Junqiu, Qiu Shengrong and Zhao Yanxia. The stage manners, artistic accomplishments and schools of performance have helped shape and define today's Jingju Theater Company of Beijing.

Jingju Theater Company of Beijing has staged over three hundreds of classical plays and created more than a dozen of new plays since its founding. Many of them have won top national awards, including “Three Fights with Tao Sanchun” and “Last Touch to Dragon Painting”. In China the Jingju Theater Company of Beijing is famous throughout the country for its artistic professionalism and its size. The company nowadays consists of three performing ensembles, the youth troupe, which is designed to prepare young performers, the Mei Lanfang Troupe that is named after the most famous performers of all times, following his performing practices, and the No. 1 Troupe which unites the most popular and acclaimed performers of the whole troupe.
